Kernow Cup 2024

 Five badminton teams from all over Cornwall played in Sunday’s Kernow Cup team tournament at Truro School’s Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre.

The teams

The teams taking part were a mixture of league and social clubs of two men and two women, and were Truro, Falmouth United, Chuff Choughs, Terobay Smashers and Tecans Racket Rebels, playing a men’s and women’s doubles then two mixed doubles games for each match.

The eventual winners were the Terobay Smashers, made up of Lorna Riggs, Sara Best, Tony Wong and Giles Piper.

With some entertaining and close run games, the players had an excellent day’s badminton in this popular tournament hosted by Cornwall Badminton Association.

The Cornwall team finished off the season in style at the weekend, completing an impressive unbeaten run to become Division Champions and gain promotion after excellent victories over Avon, Berkshire and Guernsey, giving them an amazing 23 point advantage over their nearest rivals.

Before this final set of matches, Cornwall had comprehensively beaten teams from Devon, Somerset, the Isle of Wight, plus another Avon team, 11-0 in each match to have a healthy lead, but needed to win enough games to secure promotion. This young, talented team proceeded to win the majority of the remaining games and can be very proud of their efforts this season, and will look forward to playing at a higher level next year.

With sections for players with physical (wheelchair, lower limb, upper limb, short stature, deaf)  and learning disabilities.

Play starts at 11am. More info will be sent on start times once entries have been received.

Acceptance into the tournament will be confirmed by the 7th April 2024. 

Groups will be organised on receipt of entries.  Age/ability will be taken into consideration, and a points adjustment system will be used if necessary.
