The Kernow Carlton Cup

On Sunday, social and league badminton teams came from all over Cornwall to the Sir Ben Ainsley Sports Centre in Truro for Cornwall Badminton Association’s brand-new tournament, the Kernow Carlton Cup.

Teams of two men and two women competed against each other for the trophy in level doubles and mixed doubles events with a final play-off for the overall winner.

The finalists - winners Mounts Bay and runners-up Newquay

The clubs that took part were Choughs (Camborne), TruFal (Truro/Falmouth), Mounts Bay (Penzance), St Austell Bay, Newquay, Par, Wednesdays (St Austell), CSM (Penryn), and Truro, in an enjoyable day of good badminton.

After some close fought games, Newquay came through as the Box B winners, over nearest rivals, the CSM club based in Falmouth University’s Penryn campus. In Box A it was the Mounts Bay team that dominated with a big gap to second placed St Austell Bay.

And so, the final began with the men’s doubles, which Newquay’s powerful combination of Nathan Holmes and Drew Daniels taking both ends, despite a fight back from the Mounts Bay boys in the second end.

Next up was the women’s doubles, and Mount’s Bay Marianne Fowler and Choi Wong combined well to outpoint Lorna Riggs and Jane Hamberg of Newquay, leaving it all down to the two mixed doubles games to decide the outcome.

Jamie Dunn and Marianne proved too strong for Drew and Lorna with their careful placement and attack, to give Mounts Bay an advantage, and then Nathan and Jane levelled things up yet again by beating Tony Wong and Choi with some hard hitting and fast court coverage.

Some quick calculations and the winners were announced – by only 4 points, Mounts Bay had triumphed, after an exciting, high quality final, to end the successful day of this new tournament.

Time for change

Dear fellow county members,

As many of you will know, I have served this county badminton association for several years now, from my early days as Development Officer to my current role as County Chairman.  It has been an immensely rewarding time and has enabled me to witness and assist in some memorable achievements within Cornwall badminton. However, I now feel that the time has come for me to “hand over the reins” to someone else.  Accordingly, I will be formally resigning my post as Chairman at the forthcoming County AGM and Presentation event at the White Hart, St Austell on May 5th.

I will remain involved but at a distance, in that I will continue to be one of the authorised document checkers for those applying for or renewing a DBS certificate.  Similarly, I will continue my work with Truro Junior BC for the foreseeable future and hope thereby to retain my links with CYB. True to say that I love this sport and this county, but I feel that I have little more to give and that it is time for you to seek someone with new and probably younger ideas and energy.

There is plenty of time for you as individuals and as clubs, to discuss the situation and for one or more of you to offer yourselves to replace me – it shouldn’t be difficult.  The post is not onerous, and you will have the support of a very able committee, most of whom are standing again for re-election and who are extremely knowledgeable and experienced in organising our sport within Cornwall and beyond.  You should also consider coming onto the committee even if you don’t feel ready to take on the chairmanship at this point. Please, everyone, see if you can give just a little time to serving this wonderful sport and county of ours.

I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM.

Tony Poole, Cornwall CBA Chairman
