Cornwall’s county badminton squads delivered an outstanding finish to their season on the final county match weekend, with both the 1st and 2nd teams producing impressive performances that showcased their growth, determination, and emerging young talent.

Cornwall 1st Team Narrowly Miss Out on Promotion

The 1st team began the weekend sitting mid‑table, but immediately set the tone with a hard‑fought victory over Devon 2nd team. In a match where five rubbers stretched to the full three ends, Cornwall held their nerve to secure a 7–4 win and start their campaign in style.

Momentum continued to build as they faced a strong Dorset 1st side. In one of their most complete displays of the season, Cornwall stormed to an 8–3 victory, closing out the first day unbeaten.

On Sunday, the team reached even greater heights. Up against a powerful Avon squad, Cornwall delivered a superb performance to win 10–1, propelling them to the top of the table and level on points with Devon 1sts. However, despite winning all but one match over the past six months, they missed out on promotion by the slimmest of margins — just three games.

This young side can take enormous pride from their consistency, improvement, and outstanding results across the season.

Cornwall 2nd Team Impress With Strong Finish

The 2nd team also produced a weekend to remember, underlining their promise and rapid development. Featuring three under‑18 players — one making their senior county debut — and drawing talent from across Cornwall, the group showed cohesion and confidence throughout their final matches.

Their first encounter saw them overcome Somerset with a well‑earned 7–4 victory. Building on that success, they delivered an even more dominant performance against the Isle of Wight, securing a superb 9–2 win to close their season.

Their efforts were rewarded with a third‑place finish, an excellent achievement for a young and fast‑improving squad, and a strong indicator of a bright future for Cornwall Badminton.
