The weekend of 13–14 June saw two representatives from Cornwall Badminton travel to the University of Nottingham to take part in the Special Olympics GB National Games, achieving both sporting success and vital leadership contributions.

Nikki Welch of Liskeard Inclusive Badminton Club competed against a strong field of around 60 athletes across all three badminton disciplines. Delivering an outstanding performance throughout the weekend, Nikki demonstrated determination, skill, and consistency on court. Her efforts were rewarded with an impressive medal haul:

  • Gold medal in Mixed Doubles
  • Bronze medal in Ladies’ Doubles
  • Bronze medal in Ladies' Singles

This remarkable achievement highlights Nikki’s dedication and the strength of inclusive badminton within Cornwall.

Also representing Liskeard Inclusive Badminton Club was Jess Canfield, who attended the Games in her role as a National Sports Advisor for Special Olympics GB, and for this event served as the Head Referee. In this key leadership position, Jess oversaw the operation of all 15 courts, coordinated nearly 20 volunteers, and ensured smooth competition for over 60 athletes. Her role was crucial in maintaining both the integrity of the competition and the spirit of the Games.

Together, Nikki and Jess exemplified the talent, commitment, and community values that Cornwall Badminton continues to promote, making the county proud on a national stage.
