At the weekend, 8 teams from league and social clubs across Cornwall descended on Truro’s Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre to play in this year’s Kernow Cup team tournament.
This popular event, gives badminton players in teams of two men and two women, the opportunity to play matches of men’s and women’s doubles, plus two games of mixed against each other in different groups. For some, this is their first experience of tournament play, while others are experienced regulars.
This year’s teams were made up of players from TC Academy, Liskeard Inclusive club, Saint Piran’s club, two teams from the CSM university club, Truro club, Newquay Net-Cords, plus the Shuttles Bang Bangs - a team of all-stars!
There were some great games in the groups, and eventually the top two went through to the final, after the play-offs. The closest game of the day saw the Liskeard Inclusive team beat TC Academy by a single point in a thrilling 4th v 4th play-off match!
In the final, Newquay Net-Cords came out on top over the Shuttle Bang Bangs, with a convincing win in the end, and finish an enjoyable day’s badminton as a season finale.
