BADMINTON – MAIN PREVIEW NO. 3

BADMINTON: DUCHY “OPEN” ATTRACTS 132 COMPETITORS, INCLUDING 19 FROM CORNWALL, THE HOST


There has been an excellent entry of 132 overall, including nineteen from the host and a remarkable sixty in the Men’s Singles’ Discipline, for the Duchy of Cornwall 24th “Open” Badminton Championships, which will see competitors drawn from a spread of twenty six English and Welsh Counties, writes John Tresidder.

The prestigious Event, in its 7th year as a BADMINTON England “Satellite” Ranking Tournament, is scheduled for Carn Brea Leisure Centre, Pool, Near Redruth - next weekend - on Saturday and Sunday, September 16th / 17th and has a prize-fund of £1,185.

And, the new “Rally-Point” System of scoring – the best of three games of 21/five disciplines of play - will be adopted for the first time at the “Open”.

Saturday:

Men’s and Ladies’ Singles, followed by Mixed Doubles, extending to and inclusive of the Mixed Doubles Semi-finals, on the Saturday evening.

Sunday:

Mixed Doubles Final and Men’s & Ladies’ Level Doubles.

The “Bleacher” tiered seating will be arranged for supporters and spectators and the entry to the hall is free.

Mark heads the seeding in two disciplines of play:

Mark Burgess, Hampshire’s former England International, heads the seeds in the Men’s Singles, together with the Level Doubles, where he partners Chris Evans, his county compatriot.

Guernsey’s Paul Le Tocq, the Men’s second favourite, however, is a player to watch and who has the sublime talent, undoubtedly, to win the title.

Meanwhile, Jo. Dix (Hampshire), ranked England No. 6, returns to defend the Ladies’ Singles title, as the top seed, with Caroline Simpson – a past champion – seeded to meet her in the final, in the number two berth.

And, in the Ladies’ Doubles, Heather Olver and Marianna Agathangelou – the Avon/Jersey outfit, ranked 13/14 Nationally, are seeded one.
