BADMINTON: CLAIRE SECURES FOUR MARVELLOUS COUNTY JUNIOR TITLES, WITH BRONWEN REGISTERING A HAT-TRICK.
The second leg of the Cornwall Junior Badminton Championships, 2005/2006, for the Under-15 and Under-17 age groups, organised by Cornwall Youth Badminton (CYB), was staged at Fowey Community Leisure Centre, Fowey, over the weekend of January 7th / 8th and once again proved very successful, indeed. The weekend followed on from the Championships first day, on November 27th, when the Under-13 events were contested, writes John Tresidder, with Tony Poole. Truro School’s Claire Whitmore, aged 14, won a magnificent four titles over the weekend, including the Girls’ Under-15 Singles and Girls’ Doubles, whilst teaming up with Bronwen Wotton. Miss Whitmore, whose family home is in Carnon Downs, Near Truro, then proceeded to move up an age group, to record the Under-17 Doubles, in partnership with Bronwen Wotton and the Mixed Doubles with Dan Mock, a School compatriot, to crown an exhausting two days. Bronwen’s hat-trick: And Miss Wotton, Leedstown-based, was seen to gain an excellent hat trick of titles of her own, in the process, including the Under-15 Mixed with Chris Glasson, who lifted two titles, as well. Meanwhile, in the Under-15 Singles, Claire’s success, thus avenged the 15/8 reversal, in same discipline by Bronwen, her doubles partner, at the 10th Kerrier Junior Event, held last November. Claire, who has been blessed constantly with power overhead, now has more efficient footwork, allied to this and is seen to be moving much faster around her beloved badminton court these days. Effective around the head shot: The young champion has also developed an effective around the head smash and fast-drop shot, which has been coached by David Hunt, one of her Masters at Truro School - a former Cornwall Badminton First Teamer, who was probably Cornwall’s best ever exponent at this shot. Meanwhile, Bude’s Will Pepworth replied with a brace of victories in the Under-15 age group, with Dan Mock, of Camborne/Truro School, reaping two Under-17 disciplines, as well. The CYB organisers were Domini Andrews, the Secretary/Tournament Secretary and Tony Poole, the Chairman - who was the joint presenter - ably-supported by Steve Glasson, John Wotton and Jenny Marchant, the County Badminton Chairman. Joe Trethewey, the Badminton Development Officer, for Cornwall, based in Torpoint, supported the event, prior to attending to a number of presentations for an exciting weekend’s play. Finally, Mr. Poole wishes to express CYB’s deep gratitude to the Management & Staff at Fowey Community Leisure Centre, in respect of their sterling work and commitment over the three days. “Role on the 2006/2007 Junior Championships,” Mr. Poole concluded. Yours sincerely, John Tresidder, Cornwall County CYB & Duchy “Open” Press Officer.
