THE KERRIER JUNIOR BADMINTON TOURNAMENT ATTRACTS ANOTHER EXCELLENT ENTRY, AS THE CORNISH & DEVON CREAMS PRODUCE A PLEASING MIX OF PLAY

The Kerrier Junior Badminton Tournament, organised by The Camborne-based First Edition Junior Badminton Club, proved a great success, at Truro School, Trennick Lane, Truro, last weekend (Saturday & Sunday, December 3rd / 4th), writes John Tresidder.

There was an excellent entry, approaching 100 overall, including a squad of twenty five youngsters from Devon, two from Somerset, as well as the Cornish contingent, for this 10th prestigious Event which is one of the biggest and most popular junior tournaments in the South West of England.

Devon secured seven disciplines of play, Somerset two, with Cornwall, the host, replying with an excellent five of its own.

Day One saw the Under-13 and Under-15 age groups in action, with Devon’s Alice Feeson and Rupert Edwards (Somerset) together with the Duchy’s Bronwen Wotton (Leedstown/Hayle Community College/First Edition Club) and Chris Glasson (Camborne/Truro School/First Edition Club), all recording a marvellous brace of titles, apiece.

Meanwhile, on Day Two, Verity Pitts, aged 15, from Ivybridge, replied, likewise with two wins to her name – Girls’ Under-17 singles, together with the doubles, in partnership with Charlotte Tonkin, her Ivybridge College compatriot.

All-Cornish Finals:

There were three All-Cornish finals, including the Boys’ Under-17 Singles encounter, between Dan Mock and Douglas Andrews, which produced an abundance of skilled play, before Mock came up trumps eventually, 15/5.

One of the most exciting finals was the last event on court, undoubtedly - the Boys’ Under-17 Doubles. Chris Glasson, who was seeking a hat-trick of wins, teamed up with Launceston College’s Tom Lyle; however, the plucky duo went down narrowly, 15/14, in a battle-royale, to Devon’s Jamie Roberton and Ellis Marshall, from the Queen’s Club, Crediton.

Another promising tournament for Johanna.

Meanwhile, Johanna Philp, aged twelve, who hails from Port Isaac – Kernow’s talented New Kid on the Block - was seen to have another successful weekend – being the runner-up in the Girls’ Under-13 singles and doubles, in tandem, with Maddie Easterbrook, from Fraddan, Near Hayle.

The latest promising play, came in back-to-back weekends, following her hat-trick of victories at Fowey in the Cornwall Junior Under-13 Championships, 2005/2006.

Financial Assistance, together with the venue, was provided by kind permission of Mr. Paul Smith, Headmaster, Truro School and the School Governors.

Mr. Nick Lake, the former Cornwall Badminton player and The Managing Director, of the Countryman Free Inns Group - whose HQ’s is at Piece, Carnkie, Near Redruth - kindly provided the sponsorship for the Kerrier.
