JOHANNA SECURES A RUNNERS-UP BERTH, AS THE CYB & FIRST EDITION YOUNGSTERS FEATURE WELL IN THEIR TRAVELS

On Saturday, November 5th, four members of the Cornwall Youth Badminton (CYB) squad, produced fireworks on the court, when they competed, out of County, in two South West of England Tournaments, writes John Tresidder, with Kath Wotton.

Firstly, in the Devon Junior Under-13 “Open”, held at The University of Exeter, Johanna Philp, from Port Isaac - competing in her first “Open” Tournament - was seen to achieve a remarkable feat, when she reached the Girls’ Under-13 singles final

Johanna, aged 12, who is a student at Truro School, excelled throughout the tournament and narrowly missed out on winning her event. However, she became the proud recipient of a silver medal for her sterling effort on a memorable day

Kath Wotton, CYB’s Under-15 Team Manager commented: “This is a fantastic achievement for Johanna And, it bodes well, most certainly, for a successful future for her in the sport.”

Meanwhile, in the West of England Under-15 Tournament, staged at Melksham, Wiltshire, Chris Glasson (Boys’ Doubles), together with Claire Whitmore and Bronwen Wotton (Singles), all topped their groups.

One & All’s competitors proceeded to work tirelessly, in their semi-finals, but missed out on reaching the respective finals, but gained invaluable experience in the process.

Award of National Gradings:

The youngsters’ performances resulted in individual bronze medals being awarded by BADMINTON England.

In addition, the three have now achieved a National Grading (3B), which will open opportunities to compete at the next level.

The success of Joanne, Chris, Claire and Bronwen, who are all members of the Camborne-based First Edition Junior Badminton Club and Cornwall Youth Badminton, is an indication of the on-going success of the development of Youth Badminton, across the Duchy.

Finally, all four students plan now to enter the Kerrier Junior Badminton Tournament, scheduled for Truro School, on December 3rd / 4th. There has been considerable interest from Devon County, already and the contact is: Mr. Alan Williams (Chairman & Tournament Secretary), Camborne, Tel: (01209) - 712626.
