CORNWALL BADMINTON – PLAYER PROFILE - GUY MICHELL
6th November, 2005 BADMINTON STAR GUY’S UNFORGETTABLE SIX WEEKS In the words immortalised in Nat King Cole’s classic song, Guy Michell, aged sixteen, from St. Austell, has just experienced an unforgettable and remarkable six weeks – and at the beginning of the 2005/2006 badminton season, as well, writes John Tresidder, the Cornwall Badminton Press Officer. The popular Cornwall College, St. Austell, student, aged sixteen and the current Cornwall Under-17 and Under-21 singles champion, opened up his account for the season, when he became the proud recipient of the Best Cornish Player Award - in the Duchy of Cornwall 23rd “Open” Championships, held at Carn Brea Leisure Centre, Pool, Near Redruth, on September 17th / 18th. Guy then followed this up, two weeks later, by winning not just one, but two Cornwall Senior “Closed” titles, the Men’s Singles and the Men’s Doubles – in tandem with St. Austell Bay Club compatriot, James Whetter – to register his first Senior successes, at Polkyth Leisure Centre, St. Austell, Kernow’s County base. Coveted County No. 1 berth awarded: The Duchy’s selection panel then proceeded to reward the young man - who is also a coach, who assists with the coaching of the St. Austell Bay Juniors, as well as with Cornwall Youth Badminton (CYB) - by handing him the coveted number one berth for the Cornwall Badminton First Team. Guy, naturally, taking everything in his stride didn’t let them down, either, winning his singles rubber in three games and a brace of doubles – in tandem with Whetter once more – in the 10-5 home victory over Avon, on October 30th. Sublime talent: Summing up, Guy is known, not only for his sublime talent in his sport - his power game/power smash, is now allied to his original exquisite touch and “tumbler” net shots – but for his composure and sporting behavior, on and off the court, as well. Well done indeed, Guy. Best wishes for your academic studies and badminton career - from Mike Avery (County President), Jenny Marchant, the Cornwall County Chairman and the writer, John Tresidder.
