CHRIS GLASSON NAMED CORNWALL’S PLAYER OF THE MATCH AS THE CYB’S DOWN AT HOME
Cornwall Youth Badminton’s Under-15 Team competed in their first match of the season and, despite a spirited display, went down by 26 rubbers to 8, to Avon County, at Truro School, on October 16th, writes John Tresidder, with Kath Wotton. The Boys’ singles reaped three wins for the home team, with the number one, Chris Glasson, clinching a stunning marathon, three-ender, over Avon’s Danny Parsons. This was followed by both Peter Sinclair and Joe Abrahams – with the latter on his Cornwall debut - pulling off impressive victories, as well. Ryan Cleave, Ross Lashbrook and Robert Newlands, all newcomers to the side, went down against some strong opposition from Avon but not before having a say in the proceedings. The Cornish Girls won two and lost four singles rubbers, in what were some closely- fought and entertaining encounters. Claire Whitmore (No. 1), put up in an impressive performance against Avon’s highly ranked Emily Hollis, whilst Bronwen Wotton had an impressive victory in the number two berth, as did Joanna Philp, number three, in her first outing in a Kernow shirt. Maddy Easterbrook and Emily both lost cliff-hangers, in three-ended deciders, whilst Charlotte Heather - another promising newcomer - fell in the number six slot. The doubles displayed some of the CYB Team’s inexperience in its newly formed side – on both the boys’ and girls’ fronts. The boys went down by 8 rubbers to 1, with Glasson & Cleave pulling off a famous victory. Meanwhile, the girls lost out by 7 rubbers to 2, with Whitmore and Wotton winning two out of three of their games and putting their considerable experience to good advantage. And Easterbrook and Philp were very unlucky to lose two of their games in the deciding ends. In the Mixed Doubles, acting as the culmination, Cornwall were defeated in all six matches. However, there was much to reflect on, with some strong performances all round. Summing up, One & All can be justly proud of a highly promising performance, with an abundance of team spirit seen to be to the fore, constantly. The Team now looks forward immensely, to its next match - at home to Dorset at Fowey, on Sunday, November 20th (11.00am). Player of the match was awarded to Chris Glasson, Camborne-based, in respect of his stunning singles victory and also for his support of the less experienced players in the team.
