CORNWALL: JAMES AND RACHEL REGISTER A BRACE OF SENIOR “CLOSED” TITLES, APIECE.
Guy Michell, followed on from his Best Cornish Player Award, at the Duchy of Cornwall “Open”, held at Carn Brea Leisure Centre, by winning a superb brace of titles, in the Cornwall Senior “Closed” Championships, two weeks later - at Polkyth Leisure Centre, St. Austell, writes John Tresidder, with Jenny Marchant. Guy, aged sixteen, lifted the Men’s Singles - his inaugural senior success - and then, with the adrenaline still flowing, followed this up with a second title a day later, to crown a remarkable fortnight’s play on his beloved badminton courts. The Friday Evening saw Michell - a student at Cornwall College, St. Austell - and James Whetter, winning their two Men’s Singles’ boxed sections, which comprised three players, respectively, and then progressing to the final, where Whetter was seen to secure the first game; however, Guy – who has been a prolific winner in the Kerrier Series of Junior Events – rallied marvelously and registered the final two ends and his first County title in the process, 13/15, 15/12, 15/2. Then, on Day Two (Saturday), the St. Austell Bay singles finalists joined forces and went out on court as a pairing to lift the Men’s Doubles event, securing all ten games, in the round-robin organised event. Another double winner was: Rachel Irish, who first won the Ladies’ Doubles, in tandem with Kath Wotton and then went on to register the Mixed Doubles, in partnership with Pete Bazin, on Day Three’s Sunday. And it was pleasing to see Kath Wotton, the former Cornwall number one - when she was known as one of the Duchy’s fittest ladies - back playing so well. St. Just’s Claire Stott became the other blue-ribband singles discipline, when she defeated Rachel Irish, 11/6, 11/7. Twenty four competitors were involved in the Championships, held over three days - September 30th & October 1st/2nd - and which were organised by Kerry Stephens, the Cornwall Badminton Match Secretary and the County Management Committee.
