OBITUARY: WINNIE DREW - MUM OF ONE OF THE DUCHY’S MOST FAMOUS SPORTING FAMILIES

Mrs Winifred (“Winnie”) Drew, nee Evans, from Helston, and a Mother to one of the Duchy’s most famous sporting families, passed away at Treliske Hospital, Truro, on July 27th, writes John Tresidder.

Her funeral service, conducted by the Rev. Andrew Hill, was held at Trewennack Methodist Church, Near Helston and was attended by family and numerous friends.

Mrs. Drew, aged 89 years, who was born in the Trewennack Village - one of six children - together with her late husband, Reggie, proved to be a great inspiration and support to their four children - Graham, Tony, Barry and Peter – who became one of the Duchy’s most famous sporting families.

Sadly, another brother, Douglas, died early on in life, aged 2 1/2 years.

The Drew Brothers, between them, have been associated with many sports, in Cornwall, at a high-level of competition, including: Badminton Cricket, Football, Tennis, Athletics, Road Running and Triathlon.

A very much-loved and respected Lady:

In past years, Mrs. Drew - who was a very popular and much loved lady, indeed - helped to prepare the teas for the Cornwall Badminton Team’s Home Matches.

And Graham Drew, the Elder Brother, is the Immediate Past Cornwall Badminton Chairman, who, today, is associated with Newquay Football and Cricket Clubs.

Mrs. Jenny Marchant (Liskeard), The Current County Chairman, on behalf of her Association, conveys sincere condolences to the Four Drew Brothers, together with Treve Evans (Cousin/County Badminton Player) and their families.
