EMILY & GUY REGISTER GLORIOUS COUNTY JUNIOR HAT-TRICKS

Around 61 youngsters participated in the Cornwall County Badminton Association’s Junior Championships, 2004/2005, for the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17, age categories, held at Truro School, Trennick Lane, Truro, on March 5th / 6th March, writes John Tresidder, with Domini Andrews and Tony Poole.

Emily James, Falmouth-based and a student at Truro School (Under-15 level) and Guy Michell, from Penrice Community School/The St. Austell Bay Club Under-17 level) – were both seen to be in outstanding form in their three disciplines of play - both registering a magnificent hat-trick of titles. Meanwhile, Douglas Andrews (Liskeard Community School/Liskeard Club), went home happy, as well, after lifting a brace of titles.

The Under-13’s was, in general, a keenly contested sector, with a pleasingly high number of entries. The future of Cornish Badminton is in good hands, providing the Community can keep on encouraging young players to come forward; though, as ever, Kernow, would be pleased to welcome more girls into the Fraternity.

Meanwhile, a new find, Ellie Stacpoole (Falmouth), was noticeable for her brave play and keenness to find the shuttle in her game, in the under-15 sections, generally, although her inexperience ultimately weighed against her in this tournament.

However, Ellie gained enormously from the event and with more coaching and training, should develop into a talented player.

The event was organised by Cornwall Youth Badminton and was run by Domini Andrews and Alison Philp, CYB’s Honorary Secretary and Chairman.

Tony Poole (tel: 01872 – 530277), the Badminton Development Officer for Cornwall, was also in attendance and assisted throughout.

Diary:

The event served as an appetiser for the Kerrier 6th Junior Badminton Tournament, scheduled for the same Truro School venue on 16th / 17th April. Entries close on April 9th and your contact is: Mr. Alan Williams, tel: 01209 -712626.

Indeed, Emily, Guy and Douglas will all be hoping to lift additional prestigious titles over this weekend.
