LOCAL BADMINTON CLUB’S STERLING “TSUNAMI” 12-HOUR MARATHON
An up-date of the Tsunami Badminton Marathon, held on February 5th, together with news of a Cornwall Under-17 Friendly, Away to Wiltshire, writes John Tresidder. Firstly, The Camborne-based First Edition Junior and Senior Badminton Clubs recently completed a 12-hour Badminton Marathon, in aid of the Tsunami Disaster Fund, with the monies raised being specifically channelled through the local ShelterBox Helston, Trust, Following the pattern and generosity of the Country as a whole, the Event was voted a huge success, with a massive total of £1,735 being realised – sufficient for 3 + Plus ShelterBoxes. Mr. George Armstrong, of ShelterBox, was duly presented with the giant cheque, by Erin Bastian and Ryan Cleave, two of the young members of the First Edition Junior Club, at the Camborne School & Community College Sports Hall - First Edition’s Base - last Saturday Morning (March 12th). It was most heartening to see the four courts active for the whole period of twelve hours, with some 120 participants attending, from all parts of the Duchy. It’s A Family Affair: Whole families were seen to turn up, to have a “knock-around”, which created a wonderful spirit of enthusiasm and fun, throughout the exciting day. The organising committee extends its grateful thanks to all concerned, in respect of their marvellous efforts, in support of this very worthy cause. And special thanks are included to: Mike Avery, the Cornwall Badminton President, who travelled many miles to attend with wife, Pauline, a Former County Secretary, The Headmaster of Camborne School, for providing the venue, together with the three School care-takers, namely, Peter Turner, Hugh Goldsworthy and Alan Ralph, who each gave, so willingly, some four hours of their time. Mr Williams, The Junior Club Chairman, commented: “A great deal of good was done by numerous people on the marathon day, which will be etched in the memory and everyone can feel justly proud of themselves. “Well Done to ShelterBox, Helston, as well and Thanks To One & All!” |
