CORNWALL U13’S v DEVON (HOME) - MATCH REPORT
Devon 22 - Cornwall 14
20 March, 2008
Cornwall
Youth Badminton’s Under-13 Team, sponsored by Dairy Crest Davidstow, entertained Devon in their final match of the 2007/2008 campaign, at Truro School, last Sunday Week (March 16),
writes John Tresidder.
The Duchy’s team was as follows :
- Jake Horton (Callington)
- Ben Johnson (Liskeard) Joint Captain
- Ellis Savage (Redruth)
- Jack Kendall (Truro)
- Chris Cooper (Ponsanooth)
- Aadhithyan Kumaravel (Truro) *
- Niamh Dunne (Truro) Joint Captain
- Emma Higson (Padstow)
- Flora Cecil (Falmouth)
- Georgia Higgs (Leedstown)
- Stacey Pascoe (St Day)
- Hannah Robertson (Callington)
* Denotes a first cap.
The Boys’ singles proved to be a bit of a toughie, with only Chris Cooper, for the Home Team, managing to secure a win over 3 ends of play. Jack and Aadhithyan games also went to 3 ends, but were unlucky not to win their rubbers.
The Girls fared better, managing to win 4 out of the 6 games, with Niamh, Emma, Georgia and Hannah all being successful. Hannah’s game was conceded, owing to the Visitors being unable to field a full team; therefore, Farzanna Shyam, from Truro, stepped in to make up the numbers and play on Devon’s behalf.
The Boys’ Doubles continued to go Devon’s way, but even though the Host’s Boys put up some stiff competition, Devon were seen to triumph 9-nil, in this discipline of play.
However, a closer analysis of the scores indicates that the majority of the games were very close affairs.
The Duchy’s Girls experienced better matches and managed to pull back six of the Girls’ doubles, with all of the combinations coming home with victories.
Emma, unfortunately, suffered a suspected pulled muscle and had to retire from the remainder of her matches.
The Mixed Doubles ended 3-apiece, with wins going to the Cornwall partnerships of: Ellis/Stacey, Chris/Georgia and Aadhithyan/Hanna.
Georgia delighted:
Leedstown’s Georgia Higgs was awarded Player of the Match, in respect of her consistent gameplay - never letting her head drop, and being in the right position at the right time on court.
Indeed, it was an enjoyable day, overall for Kernow, playing against a friendly team from Devon. The Team Managers for the day were Paul Johnson and Alison Higgs, for Cornwall, and Emily Macaulay, for Devon.
Paul Johnson commented: “Well done to Georgia and to all those who’ve represented the Under-13’s throughout the past season. Furthermore, the Team, today, really rounded it off with a fine home performance against our Neighbours from Devon, who ran out the overall winners.”
Mr. Jonson expressed his thanks to the parents that stayed to support and help, and also to Truro School’s Headmaster, Mr. Paul Smith and School Governors, for the use of their sports facilities.
Match Result: Cornwall 14 rubbers, Devon 22.
