CORNWALL U13’S v SOMERSET (HOME) - MATCH REPORT

Cornwall 17 - Somerset 19

Match Date: 2nd December, 2007

This was our third match, and what a scorcher it proved to be. writes Paul Johnson.

It started with the boys winning 4 out of the 6 matches in the singles, all closely fought with Jake, Ellis and Jack coming up trumps, William match was conceded in our favour due as Somerset were unable to field a full team, therefore they brought in one of their older players to everyone could play the games, nevertheless, it was a good match and William put up a good fight.

The girls didn’t fare quite so well, with only Flora managing to secure a win, but the overall gameplay was exciting to watch.

The boys doubles was a tough fight, with 4 of the 9 games going to 3 ends, all of ht pairing managed to secure 2 out of 3 wins, but the most exciting one was Chris and Williams match against Somersets number 1 pair, which they took to 3 ends, narrowly losing 29-30. It was for this exceptional gameplay that they were jointly awarded ‘Player of the Match’.

The girls likewise fought hard, with only Niamh and Emma, and Farzanna and Hannah managing to win one match apiece. 2 out of 3 of Flora and Georgia’s matches went to 3 ends, and they were unlucky not to be rewarded for their efforts.

The mixed doubles ended in our favour, with the pairings of Ellis/Flora, Jack/Georgia, Chris/Farzanna and William/Hannah securing wins.

  • Ben Johnson (Liskeard) Joint Captain
  • Ellis Savage (Redruth)

CORNWALL U13’S v DORSET (AWAY) - MATCH REPORT

Dorset 30 - Cornwall 6

Match Date: 10 February, 2008

We knew our match against Dorset was going to be a tough one, and unfortunately we were unable to field a full team due to other commitments.

The boys put up a good fight, but only Jack managed to take his opponent to 3 ends, with Dorset winning in the end.

The girls likewise had a tough challenge, but Georgia managed to secure our first and only win in the singles.

The doubles continued to go Dorsets way, but the pairings of Jake and Ben (2 wins), Niamh and Flora (2 wins) and Rachael and Georgia (1 win) knuckled down and fought hard to win some of their matches.

The mixed continued in the same vein, but the whole team worked extremely hard against what is currently the top U13s team in the South West. Our results this year are a big improvement on last years, and I explained to the team that winning 6 of the matches was no mean feat. Player of the Match went to Rachael for consistent gameplay, and making the opposition fight for every point.

The team was as follows :
  • Jake Horton (Callington)
  • Ben Johnson (Liskeard) Joint Captain
  • Ellis Savage (Redruth)
  • Jack Kendall (Truro)
  • Chris Cooper (Ponsanooth)
  • Ben Spencer (Ponsanooth)
  • Niamh Dunne (Truro) Joint Captain
  • Flora Cecil (Falmouth)
  • Rachael Collard (Callington)
  • Georgia Higgs (Leedstown)
  • Hannah Robertson (Callington)
