CORNWALL VETS CHAMPS REVIEW

CORNWALL BADMINTON REVIEW: BOB BELL RECORDS A DOUBLE AT THE CORNWALL VETS CHAMPS IN ST. AUSTELL.

The Annual Cornwall County “Closed” Veterans Championships took place earlier this month at Polkyth Leisure Centre, St Austell, where an entry of approaching twenty players enjoyed a very good Post-Christmas workout, writes John Tresidder with Mike Nancekivell.

Entries were divided into the Over-40's and Over-50's men’s and ladies’ doubles and mixed doubles elements.

Nigel Holmes teamed up with Bob Bell, the England Veterans’ International and the duo were the clear winners of the men's doubles event, with Bill Edgar, Camelford and Liskeard’s Mike Nancekivell, in the runners up berth.

The Ladies’ doubles was secured by Sue Biscoe (Truro) and Kath Wotton (First Edition), for a second year in succession, with the couple finishing only one point ahead of Jan Santillo and Lynda Beer, the Liskeard and Callington combination.

Bill Edgar and Celia Hillman, from the Truro Club, registered the Over-50’s mixed group; however, the pairing could not overcome the skill and experience of the Lynda Beer and Bob Bell outfit, who, in the final, lifted the Over-40’s discipline.

The tournament was honoured by the presence of Mr. Mike Avery and Mrs. Jenny Marchant, the County President and Chairman, with Mike Nancekivell, the Cornwall Vice-Chairman, being the tournament secretary.

South West Vets Championships:

Meanwhile at the South West Veterans Badminton Championships, staged at Poole, Dorset, last weekend (January 13th / 14th), the Duchy’s Over-40 and Over-55 teams came a very creditable third in both competitions.
