KERRIER JUNIOR REVIEW

BADMINTON: BRONWEN, AGED 14, REAPS A SCINTILLATING HAT-TRICK AT THE KERRIER JUNIOR EVENT

The Kerrier Junior Badminton Tournament, organised by The Camborne-based First Edition Junior Badminton Club at Truro School, Trennick Lane, Truro, last weekend – December 2nd / 3rd proved another great success.

There was an excellent entry of 100, overall, including a squad of 35 youngsters from Devon, as well as the Cornish contingent, for this 12th Event, which is one of the South West of England’s biggest and most popular junior tournaments.

Indeed, there was a large and pleasing entry from the Queens Club, of Crediton, Devon and Bronwen Wotton, from the host County was the toast of the tournament after recording a superb hat-trick of wins.

Devon won seven disciplines of play, with Cornwall, the host, replying with five of their own.

Financial Assistance, together with the venue, was again provided by kind permission of Mr. Paul Smith, Headmaster, Truro School and the School Governors.

Day One, the Saturday, saw the Under-13 and Under-15 age groups in action, with three talented youngsters registering a brace of titles, apiece:

Firstly, Torquay’s Daniel Elliott, came up trumps in the Boys’ Under-13 Singles - one of the six blue ribband events - together with the Doubles, in partnership with Steven Ford, his county compatriot – who also comes from Torquay.

Meanwhile, Bronwen Wotton, the Duchy star, secured the Girls’ Under-15 singles, before teaming up with Johanna Philp, the singles runner-up, to account for Alice Feesey and Rachel Theedom, an Exeter/Crediton combination, 21/12.

A special mention for Miss Philp, Port Isaac/Truro School, who managed to defeat Bronwen in their round robin event game, but nonetheless, secured fewer points, in the final analysis, to become the champion.

And, Crediton’s Nathan Scase, replied likewise, by registering the Boys’ Under-15 Singles, together with the Boys’ Doubles, in tandem with Josh Masson, from Crediton.

Bronwen’s hat-trick of victories:

Meanwhile, on Day Two (Sunday), Miss Wotton, from Leedstown and a student at Hayle Community School, who is a member of the Camborne-based First Edition Club, recorded another title and, in so doing, amassed a sensational hat-trick for the weekend.

Bronwen teamed up with Claire Whitmore, of Truro School to win the Under-17 doubles - run on the round robin format - by a solitary point - 105 points to the 104 points secured by Charlotte Hawkins and Cat Taylor, who hail from Crediton.

However Miss Hawkins, aged 15, the sublime talent, from Crediton’s Queens Club, Devon – England Under-17 number 22 ranked – earlier in the day, successfully defended her Under-17 singles crown, when she was the winner over Claire Whitmore (Carnon Downs/Truro School), by 42 points to 31.

Henry, Peter, Tom and Douglas - all display a sublime talent in the All-Cornish affair on court:

One of the weekend’s most exciting finals was the Boys’ Under-17 Doubles, undoubtedly.

Cornwall’s Henry Sherwood and Peter Regan – who hail from Callington and are coached by Malcolm Cooper, a former Cornwall County Coaching Co-ordinator, produced some enterprising play, to get home narrowly - against county colleagues, Tom Lyle and Douglas Andrews, the Launceston/Liskeard outfit, in a battle-royale, “nip and tuck” final, 17/21, 21/16, 21/18.

The boys’ victory made up for the disappointment of losing in the corresponding final - to a Devon partnership - last March and thus harvested a double for Sherwood, aged 15, who had earlier out-pointed Tom Lyle, his compatriot, in the U-17 singles, 21/18.

* THE KERRIER’S COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT:
  • Alan Williams, Chairman/Tournament Secretary
  • Paul Martin
  • Clif Morcom
  • John Wotton
Alison Philp, Kath Wotton (Badminton Development Officer for Cornwall) and Malcolm Cooper, all assisted with the Tournament’s organisation, with John Tresidder as the Press/PR officer.

Mr. Alan Williams, the Tournament Chairman and Secretary reported: “The 12th Kerrier was seen to be another exciting and successful badminton weekend, with camaraderie, on and off the court, to the fore.

Although a number of Cornwall and Devon’s top players were unable to compete, the Kerrier’s standard of play was exceptionally high, overall.

This was most evident amongst many of the home players, especially, who can feel mightily proud of themselves.

Planning has begun already, for the 13th Kerrier Junior Tournament, which is scheduled for Truro School, on March 24th / 25th, 2007 and I can be contacted on: Camborne, 01209 – 712626.
