Cornwall started the day with a great match against Dorset which came down to wire with the game score standing at 3 all going into the final mixed. Unfortunately Dorset prevailed to beat us 4 3. The star performer in this match for Cornwall was Bronwen, who managed to win both of her matches in fine style, & with great support from Ross in a great mixed. Lorna & Johanna won a cliff hanger of a doubles 21 20!!
Next came a very tough match against the eventual winners, Avon, whos team was represented by the England No.1 U15 boy, Chris Cole, & 2 Gold rated girls, Emily Hollis & Harriet Mortimer . As a result of this overwhelming strength, we were unable to pick up a game, going down 7 0. However, it was a great experience to compete against such a high standard of play & all of the team benefited from it.
Somerset were our next opponents, & again it was a hard fought match, but this time we emerged the victors by winning 4 3! Johanna pulled off a great singles win with Ross & Connor securing their doubles whilst Bronnie & Ross & Emily & Phil took their mixed rubbers.
Devon were again fielding a fine team, & managed an impressive 6 1 victory over us, Johanna being our only hero & winning an impressive singles rubber.
Our finest hour came at the end of a long day when we saw off Wiltshire in another close match by 4 3. Johanna won a tight singles & a mixed with partner Connor which was a tremendous effort! Lorna & Bronwen picked up a doubles & at 3 games all it was Andrew & Lorna who emerged heros & securing our fine victory at 21 20! As a result of this, the player of the Match award was given to Lorna for a fine determined effort.
Cornwall ended the day in 4th place out of 6, an excellent days play in our first ever appearance in the Inter County Tournament.
